This lesson plan is designed around the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and Jon Archambault. It’s one of my absolute faves and a preschool/early childhood staple, in my opinion. When I taught Kindergarten in the classroom, I always started with teaching Chicka Chicka because it’s fun, colorful and about a bunch of letters that climb up a coconut tree and fall down (kids love it!) Free Books
I mentioned Chicka Chicka in my article 7 Ways To Incorporate Kindergarten Readiness Into Your Gymnastics Classes from USA Gymnastics’ Technique magazine AND as part of the super cool Happy Gymnastics giveaway to WIN all of the books mentioned in my Technique article (if you missed the giveaway details, check it out here).
I will draw a winner this Friday October 2, 2015 so get entered to win!
Chicka, Chicka, WHAAA?
Never heard of this book? Don’t have a giant inflatable palm tree (you’ll see when you download the plan!)? No worries! This plan is also adaptable as a simple “ABC 123” theme week. This plan is also a strong marketing opportunity to show parents that your preschool program incorporates “school readiness” skills many families are looking for.
As always, the 3 year old and 4-5 year old classes flow is:
- Opening circle for attendance
- Warm Up song
- Quick Stretch (review gymnastics positions)
- Show how to do stations in the first rotation
- Gymnasts do the circuit
- Get a drink
- Show how to do stations on the second rotation
- Gymnasts do circuit
- Pit time/Tumbl Track/Tramp time
- Closing Circle (review and do focus skill from that week)
- Goodbye Song
